Jennifer Smet was child actress who appeared twice in Coronation Street. In Episode 3 (16th December 1960) she played one of the gang of children that sang Cliff Richard's song 'Living Doll' and taunted May Hardman. Almost a year later she appeared in Episode 103 (6th December 1961) as one of several children in the street. No other known roles are credited to her. The 78-year-old star said his weight hasn’t changed for many years, having slimmed down following a joke about his size on Coronation Street. “I used to weigh two stone heavier than I am now but I changed it quite quickly,” he told LBC’s Steve Allen in an interview set to air tomorrow morning. “In fact, it started when I heard – on Coronation Street, one of the characters was sitting in the snug and she said, ‘Ooh I love that chubby Cliff Richard’” he recalled.
“I went ‘chubby Cliff Richard’? I looked in the mirror and I thought, I’ve got a bit chubby.
“And I used to weigh 12 stone 7lbs and I’m now to about 10 [stone] eight, 10 [stone] nine,” the Summer Holiday hitmaker revealed.
“I don’t fluctuate very much. I started a regime – eating food that’s right for my blood.
“Again I don’t know whether that’s a feasible thing but it made sense to me,” he told the radio host. “And what I found was I lost a little bit of weight and then stayed static. And I eat what I should eat and treat myself now and then.”
Sir Cliff recently admitted to turning down the opportunity to meet his idol due to the fact the star had been “putting on weight”.
Talking on The Jonathan Ross Show about his musical hero, Elvis Presley, the singer said he had been offered the chance to meet the icon by a journalist while he was in America promoting his single Devil Woman.
He remembered telling the writer: “If there had been no Elvis, there’d have been no Cliff Richard.
“He said, ‘I can arrange it but the photographs would have to be absolutely just for my newspaper,’” Sir Cliff told host Jonathan, 57.
“And I said, ‘As long as I can have a copy at the end, that’s fine.’
“At the end of the interview, he said, ‘Shall we arrange it?’ I said, ‘Let’s wait,’” Sir Cliff continued. “Because Elvis had gone through a period of putting on a lot of weight and I just thought, if I’m going to have me and Elvis on my refrigerator, I’d really like him to look [good].”
The pop legend said he later regretted his decision because Elvis died shortly afterwards.
“I think none of us knew that was going to happen,” he said.
“I was stupid, really, and I regret it to this day. I’d love to be able to say to you, ‘Yes, I did meet Elvis,’ but I didn’t.”
Earlier this year, Sir Cliff won his court case against the BBC after taking legal action against the broadcaster over coverage of a police raid on his home back in 2014.
The raid was part of an investigation into historical child sex allegations, which Sir Cliff denied.
He was never arrested or charged.
The star was awarded £210,000 in damages, with the judge saying the BBC had infringed upon his privacy rights in a “serious” and “sensationalist” way.
After the ruling, an emotional Sir Cliff said: “I’m choked up. I can’t believe it. It’s wonderful news.”
